Avril Lavigne

With her multiple platinum singles and multi-platinum albums, it’s fair to say that Avril Lavigne has had quite the successful career. The Canadian singer-songwriter began her career as a teenager, eventually signing with a major label at the age of 18. Since then, she’s sold over 30 million albums worldwide and had countless number one singles. She’s currently signed to a record label based in Indonesia. Here, we’re going to walk through her entire career so you can follow her path to success and discover what made her so special.

Early Work

As with many successful musicians, Avril Lavigne started her professional career as a teenager. She posted her first video to YouTube at the age of 15 and started gaining a following. At 16, she made her television debut on a Dutch TV show. A short time later, Lavigne was performing on national television shows in both Canada and the United States. She then released her eponymous debut album, Avril Lavigne, which became a #1 Billboard album. It featured the Top 10 Billboard hit “Sk8er Boi” and became the best-selling album of her career to date.

Breakthrough Albums

Avril Lavigne’s music career took off in the next decade with the release of her second album, Let Go. The album’s lead single, “Here We Go”, became Lavigne’s first #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100. Let Go also became her first album to reach #1 on the Billboard 200. Lavigne went on to release five more top 10 albums, her last album being Drop Dead Gorgeous in 2016. The album’s lead single, “Happy”, became Lavigne’s first album to peak above #2 on the Billboard 200.

First World Tour

Since the peak of her musical career, Avril Lavigne has focused on expanding her reach into the world of fashion. She partnered with LVMH, a luxury goods company, to create her own fashion line. In addition to designing clothing and handbags, she helped to found the Avril Lavigne perfume and cosmetic line. Since then, she’s been busy touring the world, giving speeches, and hosting award shows. She’s also become a vocal opponent of online harassment. In 2018, she launched a new non-profit organization, the Avril Lavigne Foundation, which helps to protect women and girls from cyber-bullying and encourage them to be confident and creative online. It supports organizations that work to educate and protect young people from the harmful effects of social media. In addition, the singer-songwriter launched a children’s book series, Hello Sunshine, which is a collaboration with Canadian author Margaret Atwood. The book series is inspired by Avril Lavigne’s song of the same name and features entertaining and educational stories that are perfect for the youngest fans.

Second World Tour

In the wake of the pandemic, many artists and performers saw a need to give back to their fans. Lavigne launched a national tour in early 2021 called the “Second World Tour” in support of her upcoming album, When We Were Friends. The tour was inspired by Lavigne’s song of the same name, which she wrote as a tribute to her fans. Lavigne performed the song for the first time at one of the biggest concerts of her career, the iHeartRadio Festival, which is held in Los Angeles every year. The singer then went on to headline Glastonbury and perform at numerous other festivals around the world. When We Were Friends was officially released on March 19th and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. The album’s first single, “My Favorite Part”, was released to widespread success and became Lavigne’s third #1 single and album. The singer dedicated the song to her fans and promised to return the favor with a new song every week for the rest of the year. So far, she’s kept that promise and released a new song every week leading up to Christmas. When asked about the tour, Lavigne said, “I’ve always wanted to do an arena tour, and now that I’m at the right age, I can. I’ve dreamed of this for as long as I can remember. Touring internationally and getting to meet my fans is such an incredible feeling. I’ve been performing for so long that this feels like a vacation.” She also thanked fans for their loyalty, noting that she can’t wait to come back for more.

New Album

Just like many other successful singers, Avril Lavigne has kept busy with new music. She recently teamed up with DJ Khaled and American record producer Cool Luke to form a joint venture called “Luke’s World”. The trio worked together on three tracks for Lavigne’s upcoming album, She’s Having a Baby. The collaborations are reportedly some of the most exciting she’s ever done. The album is set to be released later this year and will also be accompanied by a documentary film, which will follow Lavigne on her “Second World Tour”. She’s Having a Baby is Lavigne’s first album in three years and the first in which she’s not featured on every song. The album’s lead single, “Change”, was released last week and also features a collaboration with rapper Lil Nas X. The song will serve as the album’s second single.

Award Show Host

Another exciting aspect of Lavigne’s career is her ability to transition from music to fashion to nonprofit work to album releases to award shows to concert tours to a brand new album. She’s seemingly always finding ways to give back to her fans while still maintaining her high profile. In 2019, she hosted the Juno Awards, which recognize Canadian artists for their excellence in music, film, and television. She also hosted the Billboard Music Awards in 2018 and the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in 2016. The singer has also served as a judge at the iHeartRadio Music Awards and the Grammy Awards. In 2020, Lavigne will continue hosting the Nickeodeon and Grammy Awards and also host the Juno Awards in Toronto.

Along with her music career, Avril Lavigne has branched out into other areas of entertainment. She’s hosted numerous award shows, headlined global megafest LVMH’s Métromartie des Femmes (Metromartic Women’s Festival), and performed at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. In 2021, she’ll host the BRIT Awards, which recognize British artists and their accomplishments, and in 2022 she’ll host the American Music Awards, among others.

Older Releases

Although she’s been prolific with new music, Avril Lavigne has continued to release hits from the ’90s and early 2000s. In fact, she released her first compilation album, Best Of, last year. The album features various hits from Lavigne’s career, including “Complicated”, “I’m With You”, “Sk8er Boi”, and “I’m With You (The Extended Remix)”. Aside from this album, Lavigne has also released numerous songs as B-sides and remixes for other artists. She also appeared as a guest vocalist on several songs, including Miki’s “Beautiful”, which was featured on the soundtrack of the 2019 film Summer Sun. In addition to this, she released a soundtrack album with Miki in 2010, which featured their collaborative songs and a few tracks from Lavigne’s back catalogue. Lastly, she produced the 2017 album, Still Alive by the Australian band The Presets and released a solo album, Avril Lavigne, in 2016.

The singer has always been extremely prolific, releasing three albums every year and consistently churning out new songs. In addition to her professional career, Avril Lavigne has also taken on a more active social media presence, consistently posting about once a week. She also engages with her fans on various platforms, including Instagram, where she has over 400.3 million followers, as well as Twitter and TikTok where she has over 44 million followers. As she nears her 30th birthday, Lavigne seems to be finding new ways to inspire and entertain her fans. She’s done so much throughout her career that it’s hard to believe that she hasn’t slowed down at all. This year, she’s only released one new album (so far). It’s clear, however, that she’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
