Nicole Kidman Actress Blonde

This will be the second of a three-part series on celebrity hairstyles. In the first installment, we examined the many styles and methods used by celebrity hairstylists to craft unique looks for their clients. Now let’s take a look at some of the most stunning hair transformations wrought by the talented Nicole Kidman.

The Blonds

It’s hard to believe that just a few years ago, Nicole Kidman was virtually unknown to the general public. While her groundbreaking performance in Dog Day Afternoon—in which she played three different characters, each with a different personality—has undoubtedly earned her fame, it wasn’t until her subsequent roles in the multiple-award-winning films The Hours and Birth of Paper Dolls that her celebrity status began to blossom.

The daughter of famed screenwriter Keith (for whom she often appears in a cameo role), Nicole grew up around movies. It was obvious from an early age that she had a special talent for acting, and throughout her childhood, she trained constantly for acting roles. In fact, when she was just 15 years old, she appeared in a featured performance on the Muppet Show alongside her parents and Rod Steiger.

However, it wasn’t until she turned 20 that she started to really make her mark in Hollywood. In 2001, she starred in the biopic Paper Trail, in which she played a con artist who assumes the identity of a deceased millionaire’s wife. The following year, she appeared in Moulin Rouge! and its accompanying soundtrack, and she starred alongside her future spouse, French actor Keith Harvey, in the romantic comedy The Stepsister. These films were all met with critical acclaim and commercial success, and they earned Nicole both a Best Actress nomination from the Academy Awards in 2003 as well as a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress—a record-breaking feat for a young actor or actress.

The Beachy Waves

While it’s true that Nicole is a five-time Academy Award nominee and a four-time Golden Globe Award nominee, it’s not like she’s achieved these honors by following a formulaic Hollywood career path. As the daughter of a famous screenwriter, she was likely encouraged to follow an unconventional path and to express herself through her roles. The same can be said for her famous tousled hair, which is often accompanied by beachy waves in striking hues of blue and orange.

In recent years, Nicole’s love for the beach has been apparent. She has frequently been photographed in bikinis on the beach with her beloved husky puppies. In 2019, she even published a memoir about her travels, titled Do You Want to Know a Secret? The Beach Is Where the Action Is.

The Diamond Crown

The blonde colorway she often sports is a beautiful blend of light and dark shades. Sometimes it’s even complimented with a touch of red, as seen in the case of The Beachy Waves and The Diamond Crown (above). Other times, such as in her Golden Globe-nominated performance in the 2002 drama film The Paperboy, it’s more of a daring display of vermillion, as seen in the image below.

The multi-award-winning film director and cinematographer Ryan Coogler compared the transformation that Nicole underwent for her role in The Paperboy to that of a ‘‘sage’’. During filming, he saw her character go through a series of different moods, which required her to embody all of these shifts with her hair. In an interview with Vanity Fair, she revealed that Coogler would sometimes call his hairstylist, who would then make her a ‘‘new hairstyle every other day’’. This is a pretty big compliment coming from someone whose work you’ve probably seen, as he has directed some of Hollywood’s most iconic films, including Creed and Black Panther. The Paperboy was followed by 2006’s Finding Nemo, in which she voiced the character of Grunion Helper, and then in 2007’s The Incredibles, in which she played a supporting role as Violet’s mother, Marjorie Merriweather Post. She had previously provided the voice of Mrs. Fish in the Disney animated series, House of Beauty.

The Messy Side Bangs

In some ways, Nicole Kidman’s evolution as an actress is more interesting to observe than her professional achievements. Just when you think you’ve mastered one hairstyle, she’ll switch things up and unveil a brand new look. Take, for instance, her famous side-parted bangs, which she often wears with a messy top knot (below left). Or the time she sported a pixie cut (below right), which was so short that, when she walked, her head would be whipping around, like that of a particularly excitable puppy.

These are just a few of the magical transformations that have earned Nicole Kidman her place in history. Even now, after all these years, she still has something new up her sleeve, waiting to be unleashed upon the world. As her father, Keith, once wrote in an article for Esquire, ‘‘She is truly one of the most remarkable women in Hollywood. Not only is she a phenomenal actress, but she also manages to keep her looks fabulous, while also evolving them as she changes her roles.’’ The daughter of a famous screenwriter could hardly be expected to stick to one formulaic hair style, could she?
