An Unconventional Early Life

Born in New York City in 1966, Simpson grew up in the affluent borough of Manhattan. Her father, Joseph M. Simpson, was a successful lawyer, and her mother, Lois Cooksey Simpson, was a socialite. Although Joseph served as an important role model for his daughter as she grew up, he also encouraged her to be independent and to be her own person. While attending the all-girls Shady Grove School, where she received her diploma, Simpson developed an interest in fashion, specifically in relation to clothes for larger women. In 1989, Simpson graduated from the University of Southern California with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science. She worked briefly as a secretary at the New York Daily News and was then hired by the Los Angeles Times as a staff writer. She also contributed to the fashion magazines Elle and Women’s Wear Daily, and started her own blog, jessicasimpson.com, where she chronicled her personal style and revealed her often-bizarre taste in fashion. It wasn’t long before Simpson attracted the attention of Hollywood’s elite and was offered guest spots on red-carpet hits such as the Oscars, the Emmys, and the Golden Globes. She went on to become a popular guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, where she talked about her life and career.

A Diamond In The Rough

After the phenomenal success of her fashion blog, Simpson was inspired to write a fashion book. Titled The Jessica Simpson Cookbook: My Own Special Version of Many Classic Recipes, the tome was published in 2015 and showcased the versatility of her culinary skills. A number of recipes were inspired by the colourful fashion world she had seen around her, and some were even based on specific clothing styles. Simpson was particularly proud of a guacamole recipe inspired by aviator shades. “I never actually thought about [designing a fashion book] until I did my blog. It sort of opened my eyes to the fact that there was this entire world that I had never really experienced before,” she told Oprah Winfrey in 2015. “I was inspired by the way that my mother raised me – to be strong, independent, and to follow my heart. So I guess that’s what this book is really about.”

Becoming A Style Icon

With the publication of her first novel, Simpson found herself on the cover of all the major magazines and was regularly featured in fashionable publications such as Vogue, Elle, and W, where she became known for her unique take on the classic ‘50s housewife look. She also created her own fashion line, JESSICA SIMPSON FASHION, in 2007 and in 2012 launched a clothing collection for HSN titled Jessica Simpson Collection.

From her humble beginnings, Simpson’s story has been an incredible one, and her incredible style journey has helped to redefine what it means to be a woman. She may have started from humble beginnings but Simpson’s charm and wit have captured the imagination of millions, and made her one of the most stylish and successful women in the world.
