A Guide to the German Cuisines

Every cuisine is beautiful in its own way, but what makes German cuisine exceptional is its diversity. You may be familiar with German wines, which are world-class, and the food that goes with them – bock beers, pretzels and all things bratwurst – but did you know that Germany is also home to classical French cuisine, authentic Italian fare and exquisite English dishes?

The variety is wonderful, but it can be a challenge to know how to explore it all in one trip. Luckily, you can find an A-Z of German restaurants and eateries, that will help you with all your culinary needs. Here’s an A-Z of restaurant guide that will tell you where to eat and what to order in every neighbourhood in Berlin – from modern American cuisine at street fairs and truck stops, to world-class haute cuisine in trendy restaurants.

Street food

One of the great things about Berlin is its street food. Berliners are very talented when it comes to food – whether you’re eating at an upmarket restaurant or a hole-in-the-wall café – and they love to serve fantastic, cheap bites. This is the perfect opportunity to try something new, whether it’s a traditional German dish or an international twist on a German theme. Don’t forget to look at the specials board before sitting down to eat, as this will help you decide what to order.

Cafes

Cafes are one of the best places to get a coffee in Berlin. You’ll find everything from traditional café stops, with high tables and chairs, to small, independent cafés hidden down an alleyway. There’s even a vintage café scene in some parts of the city. You can sit down and have a friendly conversation with the people next to you, or you can go for a quieter coffee and write your daily news digest. There’s something here for everyone.

Restaurants

Restaurants in Berlin serve a range of cuisines and the food is generally quite affordable. There are also a number of five-star restaurants, where you can indulge in an exceptionally high-quality meal. If you want to eat somewhere nice, but don’t want to break the bank, then these are the places to go – although there are a variety of options available, so you’re sure to find something that suits your budget.

Bars and clubs

For those looking for a more social experience, there are a number of bars and nightclubs in Berlin where you can meet people from all over the world. These are the perfect places for a drink or two, perhaps after finishing work for the day. Alternatively, you can head to a jazz bar and enjoy some live music – whether you sing along or not! Bars and clubs can be a great way to make new friends, no matter where you are in Berlin.

Fine dining

Berliners are very proud of their culinary scene and it’s not hard to see why – the city has a lot to offer when it comes to food. There are plenty of beautiful restaurants in Berlin, serving a range of foods and beverages from around the world. If you want to eat somewhere special, you should look no further. Whether you’re a fan of French cuisine or Italian mondo cuisines, you’re sure to find an establishment specialising in world-class dining.

Brunch

One of the most popular ways to enjoy a meal in Berlin is with a side of coffee and cake. This refers to a particular set of restaurants and bakeries that serve breakfast all day, along with a range of sweet and savoury snacks. You may find that these places are most popular with children, but it’s a great way for the entire family to socialise and enjoy food from around the world. The perfect way to start the day in Berlin – even if it is just a small meal – is with a pastry and coffee. You may also find that some bakeries and cafés stay open late, so you can enjoy a hot chocolate or gelato at any time.

This list of restaurants will help you navigate the culinary scene in Berlin, no matter what you may prefer. From American diners trying out new recipes at truck stops and fairs, to internationally-themed restaurants and eateries in the city’s trendiest districts, you’ll find something here to please even the pickiest of diners. With so much variety, it’s easy to see why Berlin is recognised as one of the world’s greatest cities when it comes to food.
